'Malerische Vorgehensweise’ (Painterly Approach)

This is my presentation opening the celebration ‘50 years of GEDOK Freiburg’ in 2012. GEDOK brings together women artists and female art supporters across Germany. I am delighted to have been invited by this prestigious and well-established arts organisation to give the address. The presentation is in German.

What do you do when you paint in nature? In this presentation I explore the Western European tradition of imitation (mimesis), its philosophical history and its method of linear perspective. After a short indication of other approaches taken in different geographical locations and at other historical times, I revisit Western European philosophy, this time focussing on Martin Heidegger, who contextualises the mainstream Western European approach and offers a path towards an alternative, embedded in our Being-in-the-World.
